My 5-year-old daughter is very good with arithmetic but whenever she has to do her English homework she freezes up. Her teacher has complained that she does the same thing in class as well. I have tried to work with her on it but she just cries. What can I do?

Hi Keke. I’m always of the opinion that there’s never a bad student, they’ve just never met the one that connects with them and made learning comfortable and easy. Being just 5 years of age, there’s less years to wade through in discovering what’s going on with your kid’s learning – that’s great. Maybe her experience at one stage in her English learning met with harsh teaching style that got her frightened of learning English. This could either be from home (if you or someone else takes her in English) or the school teacher’s way of passing knowledge across. We as adults would not like it when people in a bid to pass information to us put us down or is overly critical of us while learning, how much more a 5 year old who has not yet understood what all this whole thing called school is about 🙂
The best teacher is and should be from the home. I’d suggest you take time out if you’ve not to be her tutor (elementary school shouldn’t be that complex) and try encouraging her more with her spelling and speaking and writing even when she’s making mistakes. Your encouraging words will give her the confidence boost to overcome her fear. Best of luck!
